ROME --Â The Lady Hawks split the non-conference doubleheader Monday evening with Palm Beach Atlantic, falling to the Sailfish 2-1 in the opener before taking the finale 10-1 in six innings.
Shorter moves to 15-8 on the season; while PBA goes to 12-9 overall.
In game one, the Sailfish took the lead 1-0 on the solo homerun from Brianna Skipper in the second inning, and added to it in the third as Claudia Pizzarelli scored on a double to right center from Magnolia West.
The Lady Hawks cut the lead in the half in the fifth on an RBI single from
Tiffany Holland, but that was the only run Shorter would get as PBA held on for the 2-1 win.
Seven different players recorded a hit – all singles – in the game.
Payton Lippert took the loss, to move to 5-3 on the season; allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout through seven innings of work.
In game two,
Kameron Carter put the Lady Hawks on the board in the first inning as she delivered the first of two homeruns in the game, plating
Ericka Bynum to give Shorter a 2-0 lead.
And, in the second inning the Lady Hawks put the game out of reach, scoring six times. With two outs,
Peyton Barthel tallied her second homerun of the year. Before
Carson Carriker reached on an error, and advanced to second. She then moved to third on a single from Holland and came in on an RBI single from
Maddie Hunt. Bynum followed with a single through the right side to bring in Holland to make it a 5-0 game. Carter followed with a walk to load the bases, and
Dani Lukas brought in Hunt when she reached on an error by the second baseman one batter later. Bynum and Carter then score the final runs of the inning on a single through the left side from
Hannah Draper for the 8-0 score.
Down to their final at bat, before the game would have been called, PBA managed to push a run across, to make it an 8-1 game, to keep play going. Skipper led off the inning with a double and came in one batter later when Hannah Carlton reached on an error. The Sailfish threatened for more in the sixth, but the Lady Hawks got out of trouble, stranding two runners.
Shorter earned the win, 10-1, in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run homer to straightaway center from Carter - her second of the game, and seventh of the season - plating Holland; who reached on a single to lead off the inning.
Bynum, Barthel, Carter, and Holland each finished with two hits; while Carter added four RBI and Draper posted two.
Draper earned the win, allowing one unearned run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout through five innings of work. While,
Kalei Clark pitched the final inning, only allowing one base runner, on a walk, and recording a strikeout.
The Hawks return to non-conference action Wednesday at 12:00pm when Florida Tech visits Alto Park. No. 5 Valdosta State comes to town Saturday for a three game GSC series. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game finale both begin at 1:00pm.
