ROME -- The Hawks fell to Emmanuel 10-9 Tuesday evening in the final home game of the year.
Shorter slips to 0-11 overall; while the Lions earned their first win of the year to move to 1-7.
Nate Malinowski put the Hawks on the board five minutes into the game. Only to have Emmanuel follow with two to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Hawks opened the second quarter on three straight goals – one from
Matt McHugh and two from
Chase Rogers – to make it a 4-2 game with 4:53 to play before halftime. Only to have the Lions add three of their own to hold a 5-4 lead at the break.
Emmanuel added a sixth goal moments into the third quarter to extend their lead to two, before
Austin Zumbado found the back of the net for Shorter to cut the lead back to one with 12:44 to play. The Lions closed out the period with two additional goals, while the Hawks added one – the first of the game from
Morgan DeNoers.
The teams traded goals in the fourth period, with the Hawks' getting one each from McHugh and Zumbado. Before DeNoers added the final goal of the night with 1:11 to go, for the 10-9 score.
The Lions out-shot the Hawks 61-33, and held a 43-20 advantage in shots on goal. The difference, however, came as Shorter goalie,
Garry Robinson, posted a career high 33 saves on the night to keep the Hawks within striking distance. The save total is the most in the DII this season for a single game, and is just three off the DII record of 36 set in 1995 and recorded again in 2014.
Four different Hawks finished with two goals on the night – DeNoers, McHugh, Rogers and Zumbado.
The team will return to action on April 8 at Young Harris. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
