ROME --Â The Lady Hawks earned their eighth win of the year Saturday afternoon, topping Ave Maria 19-7, and marking the seventh game this year that Shorter has held an opponent to less than ten points.
The Gyrenes scored first, taking an early 1-0 lead, but the it was short lived as
Hannah Pridemore got the Lady Hawks on the board moments later. Ave Maria answered with a second goal with 26:34 to play in the first, but again Shorter countered. This time tallying four straight to make it a 5-2 game. Georgia Miller halted the run, with a score for the Gyrenes with 22:28 remaining; only to have
Shelby Beverly score three straight for the Lady Hawks to bring their advantage to 8-3 with just over ten minutes to play in the half.
Through the final ten minutes, Shorter tacked on five more to take a 13-3 lead into the intermission.
The Lady Hawks opened the second half with a goal to make it a 14-3 game, before Ave Maria netted three straight to cut the lead to 14-6 with 17:51 to go and stop the running clock.
Shorter added five in the final fifteen minutes of the half, while the Gyrenes recorded one final goal for the 19-7 final score.
Beverly led the Lady Hawks with seven goals, two assists in the game. While,
Crystal Marshall posted four goals and two assists; Pridemore had a hand in five goals (3 goals, 2 assists).
Defensively, Pridemore matched a season high with seven caused turnovers; while
Allie Perry finished with four on the day.
Shorter outshot Ave Maria 45-19; while holding a 30-9 advantage in the first half. The Lady Hawks also led in the groundballs 32-14, and won 18 of 26 draws on the afternoon.
The team will have two weeks off before returning to Gulf South Conference action at Alabama Huntsville on April 8. The Chargers won the first meeting of the teams 12-11 at Ben Brady Field on February 15. Game time from Huntsville, Ala. is set for 2:00pm ET.
