No. 25 Softball falls to Lee in extra innings

Cleveland, Tenn. -- For the second time in as many days the Lady Hawks and Lee needed to enlist the international tiebreaker rule to decide the winner. Unfortunately, for Shorter, though, the decision went in the Flames' favor as they earned the 8-7 win in eleven innings.

No. 25 Shorter moves to 21-10 on the season and 10-5 in Gulf South Conference play; while Lee improves to 18-9 overall and 9-6 in the GSC.

The Flames took the lead 2-0 in the first on a 2RBI triple from Brooklyn Frazier.

Only to have the Lady Hawks answer for one of their own when Abi Valdes scored on a groundout from Savannah Thomas. Before, making it a 5-2 game in the third on four runs. First, as Ericka Bynum delivered an RBI single to plate Tiffany Holland. Then as Maddie Hunt came in on a bases-loaded walk to Dani Lukas. And, last, as Thomas added a 2RBI double to make it a 5-2 game.

Frazier homered in the bottom of the third for the Flames to cut the lead back to one, 5-4.

Valdes singled down the left field line in the fifth to plate Hunt for the 6-4 score.

Lee tied things up in the seventh with two runs on a ground out and a wild pitch, respectively, to send the game to extra innings.

In the ninth, Holland scored for the Lady Hawks to give Shorter a 7-6 lead, only to have the Flames answer in the bottom of the inning to keep the game going.

Both teams moved their runners to third in the tenth, but neither scored, sending the game to the eleventh; where Shorter had runners on first and second but couldn't plate the go-ahead. Lee, however, used a sacrifice fly to centerfield to earn the win, 8-7 in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Hawks used all three pitchers in the game with Payton Lippert making the start and going 2.1 innings. Hannah Draper added 4.1 innings of work, before Kalei Clark came in for the final 4.0 innings. Clark took the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

???????Bynum led the offense with three hits; while Holland and Valdes each tallied two. Thomas posted a team high, three RBI.

Shorter will look to get back in the win column Wednesday, March 22, when they travel to Young Harris for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
