Cleveland, Tenn. --Â The 25th-ranked Lady Hawks completed the sweep of longtime rival, Lee University, Saturday afternoon on the road; taking the opener 3-2 in ten innings, before earning a 17-7 win in the finale.
Shorter (21-9, 10-4 GSC) came back in game one to earn the win, after falling behind 2-0. In the sixth the Lady Hawks cut the lead in half on an RBI double from
Maddie Hunt and tied the game on a solo homerun from
Savannah Thomas in the seventh.
The game remained tied until the tenth, when the tie-breaker rule was put into place, and in such
Ashley Langel was placed on second as a pinch runner for
Carson Carriker. She move to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Tiffany Holland and scored the winning run three batters later when
Kameron Carter delivered a single through the left side for the 3-2 score.
Payton Lippert earned the win, turning in a complete game performance; allowing two runs on eleven hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts, through ten innings of work.
In game two, the Lady Hawks scored in every inning and in all but one scored multiple times; while pounding out a season high 22 hits.
Ericka Bynum got things going for Shorter with a three-run homer to centerfield in the top of the first. She entered the game tied for the Shorter record in RBIs, and with the hit became Shorter's leader as her 175th, 176th and 177th career RBIs crossed the plate.
Lee (17-9, 8-6 GSC) cut into the lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. But, the Lady Hawks' picked right back up in the second with two more to make it a 5-1 game on RBI hits from Hunt and Bynum; before making it a 6-1 game in the third with a lone run.
The Flames add three in the third to cut the Shorter advantage to two (6-4). Only to have the Lady Hawks answer with two in the fourth to make it an 8-4 game. Lee countered, however, in the bottom of the inning for three runs to cut the lead to one, 8-7.
From there, though, the Lady Hawks tallied nine runs over the final three innings to put the game out of reach and earn the win 17-7.
Kalei Clark earned the win, coming into the game in the third and pitching the final five innings; during which she allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Hannah Draper made the start, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Both, Bynum and Hunt, finished the day 6-10 at the plate; while Bynum tallied a double and two homeruns with seven RBI. Carter finished with five hits on the afternoon, two in game one and three in game two.
Shorter will look to complete the three-game sweep Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Game time is set for 2:00pm from Cleveland, Tenn.
