ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to North Greenville 13-12 Saturday afternoon at home.
Shorter moves to 5-3 overall on the season and marks the third time this year the Lady Hawks have dropped a one-point decision. The Crusader's improve to 2-4 on the year.
North Greenville scored first as Rachel Kellog found the back of the net with 23:35 to play. Shorter followed moments later to tie the game on
Crystal Marshalls first score of the game. Only to have the Crusaders regain the lead on a score from Monica Colwell. The Lady Hawks answered to goal to take a 4-2 advantage on back-to-back goals from
Shelby Beverly; before NGU followed with a goal of their own to cut the lead to one.
Shorter again countered with two, this time as
Morgan LeBlanc found the back of the net on consecutive possessions to bring the Lady Hawks' advantage to 5-3 with 14:35 to play. Colwell scored a second goal of the game to make it a 5-4 score, but the Lady Hawks posted a 3-0 run to close the half with an 8-4 lead.
The Lady Hawks extended the lead to 9-4 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Crusaders countered with two to make it a 9-6 game. From there Shorter added two, from Beverly and LeBlanc, to bring shorter advantage back to five, 11-6, with 15:52 remaining.
North Greenville rallied for two to cut the lead to three, 11-8 with 14:34 to go. Only to have the Lady Hawks counter with one from Marshall to make it a 12-8 game. Down by four the Crusaders dominated play on offense for the final thirteen minutes, scoring five unanswered goals for the 13-12 final score.
In total, North Greenville held a 28-23 advantage in shots and a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal; while holding a 15-12 lead in draw controls.
Marshall (4 goals, 1 assist) and
Morgan Perrone (2 goals, 3 assists) each finished with five points in the game; while Beverly and LeBlanc each tallied three goals and an assist.
Catherine Mitchner played the complete game in goal for Shorter, making 12 saves.
Alex Abbey tallied a team leading four caused turnovers; while Maggie LaVangie and
McKinley Puckett each caused three.
The Lady Hawks return to action and to Gulf South Conference play Tuesday, March 14, when they travel to Lee in the first-ever matchup between the teams as Lee added women's lacrosse this season.
