Florence, Ala. -- The Hawks kept their win streak alive Saturday afternoon, topping North Alabama on the road, 117-111, in overtime at Flowers Hall on the campus of UNA.
The win improves Shorter to 14-8 overall and 8-8 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Lions slip to 12-10 on the season and 7-9 in conference play. The win, also improved the Hawks' win streak to three games and gave the team its first win over UNA since December of 2013.
After keeping things close over the opening minutes, the Lions tallied an 11-3 run to take an eight point lead, 26-18, midway through the first half. However, Shorter began chipping away and pulled to within one (36-35) on a three from
Damerit Brown with 7:33 to go. Before taking the lead, 41-40, two minutes later on a jumper from
Phil Taylor with just over five minutes remaining.
The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes with UNA tying things up on a layup from Sherwyn McGhee with 1:43 to play, but the Hawks answered with an 11-3 run to close out the first half with a 55-46 advantage.
Shorter opened the second period on a 13-3 run, taking their largest lead of the game on a three from
Amonte Potter with just over sixteen minutes to play. But the Lions were there, using a 21-6 run of their own to cut the Shorter lead to three (74-71) midway through the half on a jumper from Dimario Jackson.
The Hawks regained a ten-point margin with 6:26 to play on a three from
Mike Wickliff. Only to have the Lions rattle off an 11-1 run to tie the game 94-94 with 2:33 remaining.
With under a minute to play, Shorter went up 99-97 on a three from Wickliff, but North Alabama answered moments later with a jumper from Jackson to send the game to overtime.
The Hawks never trailed during the extra time, outscoring the Lions 19-12, to earn the win 117-111; shooting 60% from the field and 90% from the line. While, holding UNA to 23% shooting for the period – 0-4 from three-point range.
All five starters for the Hawks scored in double figures with Brown and Taylor leading the way with 25 points apiece. Wickliff turned in a season high 24 points – connecting on eight 3-pointers for the game – while Potter added 18.
Eric Ross tallied his 12th double-double of the season with 12 points and 18 rebounds.
Jackson's 29 points led the Lions, while four other players reached double figures, as well.
The Hawks will be back in action Thursday, February 9, when they begin the two game road trip to Mississippi to take on Mississippi College and Delta State. Tip-off against MC is scheduled for 8:30pm EST, Thursday from Clinton, Miss.
