Lady Hawks fall to Young Harris in overtime

ROME -- The Lady Hawks overcame a late deficit to force extra time Saturday afternoon before falling to Young Harris 14-13.

Shorter took a 2-0 lead in the game, on back to back goals from Morgan Perrone and Morgan LeBlanc in the opening minutes of the game. Only to have the Mountain Lions strike for two of their own moments later. But, the Lady Hawks answered with two more to make it a 4-2 game on goals from Allie Perry and Perrone.

Midway through the first half Young Harris went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 advantage with 10:49 to play. Hannah Pridemore halted the rally with her first score of the game, before Sarah Bialecki added a final goal in the half to give the Mountain Lions a 7-5 advantage moving into the second.

Shorter cut the lead to one in the opening seconds of the second half on Pridemore's second goal of the game. Only to have YHC tally back to back to make it a 9-6 game with 24:31 to play. Pridemore then added a third goal on the afternoon on the afternoon to cut into the lead, and over the next ten minutes the teams traded goals with the Lady Hawks getting another from LeBlanc.  

Down 12-8, the Lady Hawks rattled off three straight goals to cut the lead to one. First, as Shelby Beverly netted her first of the game. Next, from Pridemore on a pass from Perrone, and last as McKinley Puckett tallied her lone goal of the afternoon with 11:49 to play.

Nicole Kernohan added a score for the Mountain Lions to bring their advantage back to two, 13-11, only to have the Lady Hawks answer to tie the game. Crystal Marshall got in on the scoring for Shorter with her first of the game with 5:53 to play, and was followed just over a minute later on LeBlanc's third of the game, to tie things at 13.

Both teams had a chance at the game winning in final moments of the game, with Catherine Mitchner making a save on Kaylynn Roach's attempt, and LeBlanc's going wide for Shorter.

In overtime, Mitchner tallied two saves in goal before the Mountain Lions were able to break through with the winner from Kendra Parenteau, midway through the three minute period.

Pridemore finished with four goals, one assist; while Beverly and Perrone had a hand in four points apiece – Beverly with a goal and three assists, and Perrone with two goals and two assists. And, LeBlanc chipped in with three goals for Shorter.

On defense Pridemore and Puckett each caused three turnovers. While, Pridemore came up with eight draws and Beverly finished with five.

Mitchner tallied a career high 18 saves in the game.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action in a pair of games in the Sunshine State next week when they take on St. Vincent and Moravian on March 6 & 8, respectively.
