Pensacola, Fla. -- The Hawks closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon, falling to West Florida 110-103, on the road.
Shorter finishes 17-11 overall and 11-11 in conference play; while the Argos improve to 20-8 on the season and 14-8 in the GSC. The Hawks will move into next week's GSC Tournament as the six seed, and will travel to No. 3 Delta State for the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Phil Taylor, who tallied 53 points in the Hawks' loss to Valdosta State Thursday, followed up the performance with 54 in Pensacola; shooting 14-23 for the game with six three-pointers and going 20-21 at the line. For the week, Taylor finished 47-48 from the charity stripe, breaking the GSC records for attempts (26) and made shots (26) in a game, as well as bettering the season records as he now has 287 made free throws on 333 attempts.
Damerit Brown was the only other Hawk to post double figures in the game, finishing with 25; going 8-12 from the field ad 4-5 from beyond the arc.
The teams kept things close throughout; trading the lead for much of the first half until the Argos pulled away on a 13-5 run to close out the frame with a 54-46 lead. Over the first five minutes of the second half the Hawks posted a 16-9 to cut the lead to one on a three from Taylor, but they couldn't quite get over the hump as the Argos maintained the advantage for the remainder of the game.
West Florida had five players finish in double figures with Marvin Jones leading the way with 26; while Deangelo Legrier added a double-double of 20 points, 11 rebounds.
