ROME --Â The Lady Hawks completed the Gulf South opening sweep of Union Sunday afternoon; winning game one, 8-2, before taking game two, 4-1.
Shorter improves to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play; while extending their current win streak to seven games.
Union (6-5, 0-3 GSC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one, taking advantage of a Lady Hawk error and scoring on a groundout. But, that would be all the offense they would get as Shorter was able to hold them scoreless through the remainder of the game.
The Lady Hawks got on the board in the third, with three runs.
Tiffany Holland got things this started with a triple, with a hit that was just out the reach of the right fielder, and came in to score on an RBI single from
Carson Carriker. One batter later,
Ericka Bynum connected on a long fly ball off the centerfield wall for a 2-run inside-the-park homerun.
Shorter added to it in the fifth, to make it a 4-1 game, when
Savannah Thomas came in on a
Dani Lukas double to center field.
Before making it an 8-2 game in the sixth with four runs – all with two outs.
Maddie Hunt reached on an error by the shortstop, and came in two batters later on a single from Carriker.
Ashley Langel then came in to run for Carriker, and scored on a single from Bynum; who then came in on
Kameron Carter's 30th career homerun – moving her into sole possession of second place on Shorter's career list.
Hannah Draper earned the win, allowing five hits with two walks and three strikeouts; while both runs that scored were unearned.
Carter finished with three hits in the game; while Holland, Carriker, and Bynum each added two apiece.
In game two, Bynum put the Lady Hawks up 2-0 in the first on a two-run homer to left field; plating Carriker, who walked one batter before.
Union cut the lead in half in the fifth with a run of their own when Hannah Ridolfi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Lady Hawks ended the rally and the inning with an unassisted double play to first base; as Emily Bennett lined out to Bynum, who then stepped on the bag to double up Ridolfi.
In the bottom of the inning, Carriker delivered a 2-RBI double to right center, bringing in Hunt and Langel; who reached on a single and came in as a pinch runner, respectively.
Payton Lippert earned the win, allowing one run on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Bynum, Lukas, and Hunt each tallied two hits in the game; while Carriker added one.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action next weekend, February 25-26, when they travel to Florence, Ala. to take on defending NCAA DII National Champion, North Alabama, in GSC play.
