Women's Lacrosse tops Montevallo, 18-10, in conference play

ROME -- The Lady Hawks got back in the win column Saturday afternoon, topping Montevallo 18-10 in Gulf South Conference action from Ben Brady Field.

Shorter improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play; while the Falcons go to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the GSC.

Jami Hudak put Montevallo up 1-0 early in the first half on a pass from Janey Johnson; only to have the Lady Hawks go on a 10-0 run to pull away.

Shelby Beverly was the one to get things going for Shorter, netting a pass from Morgan Perron, before McKinley Puckett tallied her first goal of the season, and Morgan LeBlanc made it 3-1. Morgan Perrone then went back-to-back to make it 5-1, before Puckett netted her second of the game. Crystal Marshall got in on the action with 17:16 to play, and Beverly closed out the run with three straight scores.

Alyssa Kaminski halted the run for the Lady Hawks, netting the Falcon's second goal of the game. But, Shorter countered with three final scores to take a 13-2 advantage into halftime.

Montevallo picked things up in the second half, outscoring the Lady Hawks 8-5, cutting the lead to nine on a couple of occasions to momentarily stop the running clock.

Marshall scored Shorter's first goal of the half, her third of the game. And from there the teams traded goals, through the first twenty minutes of the half, before the Falcons posted three consecutive scores to bring the score to 17-8 with just over six minutes to play.

The Lady Hawks added one final goal in the game as Hannah Pridemore turned in her second of the half with 4:30 to play. Then, Hudak answered for Montevallo in the final minutes with back-to-back scores for the 18-10 score.

In total the Lady Hawks outshot the Falcons 32-23, and held the advantage in draw controls 18-12. While, Montevallo led in ground balls 24-20 and saves 12-10.

Beverly led the offense with five goals and two assists; while Marshall chipped in with three goals and three assists.

Catherine Mitchner made nine saves in goal through 53:26 of play; while Peyton Reid added on save in the final 6:34.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action Saturday, February 25, when they welcome Young Harris to Ben Brady Field in a GSC matchup beginning at 4:00pm.
