ROME --Â The Lady Hawks swept Montevallo, 3-0, Friday night in the first Gulf South Conference meeting of the two teams.
Shorter improves to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in the GSC with the win; while the Falcons move to 13-13 on the year and 7-7 in conference play.
Shorter jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-17. Before taking the second by a 25-19 final score and the wrapping up the win with a 25-17 victory in set three.
In the first set, Montevallo took an early 3-1 lead, only to have the Lady Hawks tally six straight points to make it a 7-3 game, and from there they never trailed, leading by as many as eleven (15-6) late the frame. The second set remained close early, with the teams trading points; before Shorter used a 3-0 run to pull away and widen the margin. The Lady Hawks led by as many as nine (23-14) late, before closing out the win on errors from the Falcons. The final set was back and forth for the first half. Tied at 10 each, Shorter tacked on two to pull away, before adding a four-point run to make it a 16-11 game, and from there built onto their lead with a 6-3 run for the 22-14 score. Before adding the final three points on kills from
Danielle Melton and
Morgan Cleveland, and a game ending block from
Tiffani Estep.
Estep and
Kelsi Jones were strong on the attack for the Lady Hawks; hitting .769 (10-13) and .563 (10-16), respectively, with neither tallying an error. Both also added four blocks; Estep finished with three solo and one assist, while Jones added three assists and a solo.
Tinsley Fain led the way at the service line, posting four aces on the night; whereas Cleveland chipped in with three and
Madeline Munroe recorded two, Jones also had one.
On the receiving end,
Cheyenne McLemore led with 17 digs, to go along with 10 from Munroe and eight from
Alli Bell – who also finished the night with a team high 19 assists.
The Lady Hawks will close out the home portion of the season Saturday afternoon against West Georgia. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
