Lady Hawks split weekend with UWF and VSU

ROME -- The Lady Hawks split the Gulf South Conference weekend with West Florida and Valdosta State. Friday, Shorter fell to UWF 3-0, before coming from behind to top VSU, 3-2, on Saturday.

With the split, the Lady Hawks move to 14-9 on the year and 7-4 in conference play; while the Argos stay perfect in conference play at 11-0 (22-6 overall). The Blazers moved to 10-14 on the season and 5-7 in the GSC after Saturday's match.

West Florida used set wins of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-22, to earn the victory on Friday; whereas on Saturday, after falling behind 2-0, Shorter came back and won the final three sets to secure the win. Set scores were 14-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, and 15-11, respectively.

Against the Argos, Madeline Munroe led the offense; turning 10 kills on the night. While, Kelsi Jones added seven. Tinsley Fain led the way with 12 assists, to go along with 11 from Alli Bell.

On defense, Cheyenne McLemore led with 16 digs, with Bell chipping in with 12 and Morgan Cleveland adding 10. Both, Jones and Hannah Flack, led with two blocks apiece – both assists.

Tiffani Estep led the way against the Blazers, recording 16 kills against Valdosta State; while Flack added 10 and Munroe chipped in with seven. Bell finished the afternoon with 31 assists, with Fain turning in 16. And, of the Lady Hawks' six service aces, Jones and Cleveland finished with two each.

On the receiving end, Cleveland turned in a team high 26 digs, to go along with 11 from McLemore and 10 from Munroe. Jones and Estep led the effort at the net with six blocks each. Flack added five and Munroe turned in three.

The Lady Hawks will look to keep the momentum going into Tuesday home matchup with longtime rival, Lee University. Game time from the Winthrop-King Centre is set for 7:00pm.
