Duo Leads Hawks to First Conference Win

JACKSON, Tenn. – Darwin Lom and Jordan Etsio both scored to lift the Hawks past Union, 2-0, in Gulf South Conference action.

Shorter controlled the game from the start as Mauricio Rancel, Lom, and Etsio all took shots in the first 12 minutes. Later in the half, after shots by Stefano Camarota and Antonio Santarsiero were just off the mark, Lom scored his fourth goal of the season off a header that was assisted by Phillip Middlecamp, putting the Hawks ahead, 1-0. He had another opportunity just minutes prior to halftime but could not convert, and SU took a single goal advantage into the locker room.

In the second period, Shorter managed nine shots in just over seven minutes but no players were able to extend the lead. It wasn't until the 77th minute that the Hawks held a 2-0 cushion as Etsio put the ball into the lower right corner of the goal from the goal box.

Union had a chance to cut into Shorter's lead late, but Austen Trevers made one of his three saves to preserve the shutout.

For the game, the Hawks took 22 shots compared to just six by Union. Shorter had six corners while the Bulldogs had three.

The win is Shorter's first in GSC play this season and second overall. The team now stands at 2-4 with a 1-0 record in conference, while Union falls to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference action.

The Hawks will take Saturday off and return to action the following day against GSC opponent Christian Brothers. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 2nd, from Memphis, Tennessee.
