Cleveland, Miss. -- The Hawks fell to Delta State 47-7 on the road Saturday evening.
With the loss, Shorter slips to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Statesmen improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference play.
On the night the Hawks were held to 141 yards of offense; while the Statesmen tallied 480 yards in the win.
Delta Sate opened the scoring early in the game, and didn't let up; making the visitors work for any ground. Shorter finally broke through in the third quarter, however, when
Demerious Owensby turned in his first touchdown of the season on a 32 yard run with 7:37 to go.
Brady Hammel's extra point attempt was good, to make it a 27-7 game.
The Statesmen closed out he win with three scores in the fourth quarter for the 47-7 final score.
Tyler Pullum made the start for the Hawks; tallying 19 yards on 2 completions.
Matt Williams also saw time at quarterback for Shorter, adding 60 yards on 8-16 passing.
On the ground, Owensby led the effort for Shorter with 53 yards on 21 carries for the night; while
Alex McGhee added 27 yards in the game on seven carries for the Hawks.
Receiving, Shorter had five players finish with more than ten yards on the night.
Cari Coleman led the way with 19 yards on 2 catches; while McGhee finished with one catch for 18 yards.
Maurice Sutton and
Elijah Gilbert each finished with 16 yards, and
Kartez Carr added 10 for Shorter.
On defense,
Jevaris Jones had a career day for the Hawks; recording 15 tackles – 13 solo and 2 assisted – with an interception and a sack for 13 yards.
Kevin Knight posted 12 tackles for Shorter and
Willy Dorcin added 10.
Shorter will look to get into the win column Thursday, September 29, when West Alabama visits Barron Stadium for a 7:00pm start.
