Chattanooga, Tenn. -- The season opener didn't go as planned Thursday night as the Hawks fell to Chattanooga, 66-0, on the road.
Shorter was held to just 16 total yards of offense; while the Mocs offense turned in a solid 441 yard performance.
Chattanooga opened the scoring with a touchdown seconds into the game after capitalizing on a Hawks fumble and from there didn't let up forcing the visitors to work for any ground; while adding to the lead.
On offense the Hawks couldn't get anything going without
Matt Williams and
B.J. McCoy, as neither saw action in the contest.
Tyler Pullum got the start at quarterback in place of Williams and was 0-10 on pass attempts, with an interception.
Devante James also saw time under center, completing one of two passes for two yards.
The Hawks netted 14 total rushing yards on the night, with
Alex McGhee making the most of his touches as he tallied 32 yards on seven carries.
Dante Borders added 16 yards on 5 carries; while James and
Maurice Sutton added two and one yard, respectively.
On defense for the Shorter both,
Kevin Knight and
Justin Filmore, finished the game with seven tackles apiece; while,
Jevaris Jones added five and 2.5 for a loss.
John Jarrard pulled in the Hawks lone interception on the night to halt the Mocs second drive of the game.
David Thompson turned in 342 yards on 10 punts in the game for the Hawks.
Alejandro Bennifield was 8-11 on the night in pass attempts for 135 yards and four touchdowns. Chris Miller led the run game for Chattanooga, netting 89 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.
The team will look to turn things around next week as they travel to Mars Hill Saturday, September 10, for a 1:00pm start.
