ROME, Ga. – In a game that featured a combined 10 goals, the Hawks came up on the losing end, falling to North Georgia, 6-4.
The Nighthawks struck first to take a 1-0 lead, but the advantage did not last long as Shorter scored three goals in under seven minutes, taking a 3-1 lead.
Darwin Lom scored the Hawks first goal of 2016 in the 28th minute to tie the game at one. In the 31st minute, Antonio Santarsiero put Shorter ahead, scoring off a pass from Justen Macias, and just 62 seconds after Santarsiero's goal, Jordan Etsio scored one of his own, extending Shorter's advantage to two goals, 3-1.
Down two goals at the half, North Georgia battled back and evened the score at three in the 52nd minute. Adam Farrell netted the equalizer on a penalty kick as he managed to sneak the ball past Austen Trevers.
Shorter's Lom answered Farrell by scoring his second goal of the night via a penalty kick to put the home team ahead, 4-3. In the 60th minute, Lom's kick went under North Georgia's Michael Samnik to give SU the lead.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the visiting Nighthawks scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory. North Georgia went ahead for good in the 82nd minute when William Pettersson's shot from the center of the box landed in the top corner of the goal. The Nighthawks added an insurance goal in the 88th minute and left Rome with a 6-4 victory.
Austen Trevers made 12 saves in goal for Shorter and North Georgia's Samnik made 4.
The Hawks, now 0-3 on the season, continue their home stand on Thursday, September 15, with a 7 p.m. contest against USC Aiken.
