Baseball Wraps Up 2016 Season with Sweep of Christian Brothers

ROME, Ga. -- The Hawks baseball team closed out the season by winning their fourth straight game as they completed the sweep over Christian Brothers with a 9-4 victory.

The visiting Bucs briefly led as they got on the board first in the top of the second inning with an RBI-single, but the Hawks answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Mason Long's sacrifice fly scored Raul Cortes before Harrison Hatfield followed with a two-RBI base hit up the middle, extending the home team's lead to 3-1.

Patrick Sanderson collected two of his four RBIs in the bottom of the fourth. He helped push SU's lead to 6-1 when he hit a two-RBI single to right-center field. Brian Cabrera, one of two seniors on the squad, knocked in Sanderson with a base hit as the Hawks led 7-1 after four innings of play.

Christian Brothers scored three runs over the seventh and eighth innings, but Sanderson capped off his three for five day at the plate with a 2-RBI home run in the bottom of the eighth and the Hawks won, 9-4.

Sanderson and Hatfield each had three hits for Shorter, which collected 11 as a team.

Jacob Farmer earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings in relief of starter Micah Wyatt who went 3.1 innings. Farmer gave up no hits, while walking two and also striking out a pair of Bucs.

Shorter finishes the year with 17 wins and 32 losses and a 9-24 record against Gulf South Conference opponents.

Head Coach Wes Timmons, who wraps up his first year at the helm of the Hawks, called today's win "a great effort" and remarked that it will make the offseason a bit sweeter. About next year, Timmons said, "We expect to compete. We're excited about the guys coming back and the new guys coming in."
