Cumming, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks didn't let the fact that they were taking on the nation's 5th-ranked team in Rollins College deter them as Shorter's defense stepped up in a big way Sunday morning. And, despite falling 11-1, the Lady Hawks came away with their heads held high.
Over the first half, Shorter (3-10) held the Tars to just four goals on eight shots on goal, 12 shots total. While the Lady Hawks' goalie,
Catherine Mitchner, turned in four of her seven saves in the game – three of which came on free position attempts. And, the defense caused Rollins to turn the ball over 12 times.
In the second half, Rollins (10-1) came out firing, however, turning in all seven of their second half goals in the first ten minutes of the frame to take an 11-0 lead.
But, still Shorter didn't give up, fighting until the very end; where the Lady Hawks were able to make a push on offense. With the minutes winding down,
Tiffany Kongpachith forced a Rollins turnover, picking up a ground ball at about midfield, and taking it down for Shorter's only goal of the day and her 17th of the season with 4:47 to go. Moments later the Lady Hawks were able to recover a second turnover, and make a push to score again only to have
Aubrey Geiger's goal called off as a foul was called, and then the Tars' goalie made a save on Shorter's lone free position attempt of the game.
Shorter finished with 18 ground balls in the game with
Alex Abbey and
Allie Perry each collecting a team high four. The Lady Hawks also caused 10 of Rollins' turnovers as Mitchner, Abbey, and
Kari Chambers all finished with two each.
Shorter took three shots in the game, one each from Kongpachith, Geiger, and Chambers. And Mitchner finished with seven saves.
The Lady Hawks will look to get back into the win column Saturday as they welcome Lees-McRae College to Ben Brady field for an 11:00am start.
