Softball takes series from No. 21 UWF

Pensacola, Fla. -- The Hawks ended the regular season on a high note, topping No. 21 West Florida, 1-0, in nine innings Sunday afternoon in Pensacola.

The win secures the six-seed for next weekend's Gulf South Conference Tournament, where Shorter will open play against third-seeded West Florida at 11:00am EST Thursday, April 28, from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Ala.

Shorter finishes the regular season with a 29-18 overall record and a 20-13 conference mark; while the Argos move to 37-13 overall and 23-10 in the GSC.

Despite chances from either team to take the lead, the game remained scoreless through eight full innings, before the Hawks finally broke through with the winning run in the top of the ninth. With one out, Taylor Ann Oda singled up the middle to put a runner on; she was then replaced by pinch runner, Maddie Hunt. One batter later Savannah Thomas delivered the deciding blow, a double down the left field line that stayed just inside the third base bag to plate Hunt for the 1-0 score.

Payton Lippert earned the win, her 16th of the season, holding the Argos scoreless on six hits and three walks; while striking out five. She pitched out of trouble on a number of occasions, with West Florida's biggest threat coming in the second inning with the bases loaded and one out as she got Caitlin Steel to ground into a double play to end the inning.

Tiffany Holland finished with two hits on the day; while Niki Cook, Ericka Bynum, Peyton Barthel, Oda and Thomas each tallied one.

Shorter will look to keep its tradition of strong postseason play going next week as they go for their second straight GSC Championship.
