Hawks fall to UWF in 13th innings

Florence, Ala. --The longest game in Gulf South Conference Tournament history went to West Florida as they topped the Hawks 7-6 on an RBI single in the 13th inning.

Shorter; who moves to 3-2 on the year in extra-inning games and is 2-2 against the Argos in the last week will look to keep their postseason hopes alive Friday morning at 11:00 am EST when they take on the loser of Thursday's fourth game, between Delta State and top-seeded North Alabama.

On the season the Hawks are 29-19; while the Argos move to 38-13.

The Hawks got things started in the tournament's first game in the first inning as Kendall Johnson reached on a double and came in on Kameron Carter's 13th homerun of the year. Only to have West Florida take the lead 4-2 with one run in each of the next four innings. Peyton Barthel cut the lead to one, 4-3, in the sixth with her third homer of the year and the Hawks tied the game in the seventh when Niki Cook beat the tag at the plate on a ground out from Carter.

That's when things got interesting as the teams battled for the game winner. Shorter thought they had it in the ninth as two runs scored when Ericka Bynum hit into a fielder's choice to the shortstop and Johnson beat the throw at second to allow Cook and Tiffany Holland to come home and make it a 6-4 game. However, in the bottom of the inning the Argos answered. Emily Pettigrew and Megan Toney hit back-to-back singles with one out, before Rhiannon Sassman grounded out to first base to bring Kathleen Smiley to the plate, where she knocked a 2-run double to right field to tie the game at six.

Despite chances from both teams, the game remained tied until the 13th when Chelsy Krantz reached on an error and advanced to second, before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt from Caitlin Steel, and then came in on a single to left field that was just out of reach for Johnson, for the 7-6 final score.

Kalei Kimbrell took the loss, pitching 9.1 innings in relief of Payton Lippert, striking out 11 batters.

Carter and Barthel each tallied a homerun in the game with Carter adding three RBI for 50 on the season. Cook and Johnson each finished with three hits.
