Hawks split with No. 21 West Florida

Pensacola, Fla. -- The Hawks split the Gulf South Conference doubleheader with No. 21 West Florida Saturday afternoon; falling in the opener 6-3, before taking the finale 5-3.

Shorter (28-18, 19-13 GSC) scored first in game one, scoring three times in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead as Ericka Bynum and Peyton Barthel delivered back-to-back RBI hits. Unfortunately, for the Hawks, that was all the offense they'd get; while the Argos tacked on six unanswered runs to earn the win 6-3.

Kendall Johnson finished with two hits in the game; while Barthel posted a hit and 2 RBI.

Payton Lippert took the loss; allowing six runs – one earned – on eleven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Shorter struck first in game too, as well, as Johnson and Kameron Carter tallied RBI hits to make it a 2-0 game in the third inning. Only to have West Florida (37-12, 23-9 GSC) tack on three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Down to their last at bat, the Hawks turned in three runs on five hits to earn the win 5-3. Tiffany Holland reach on a bunt single, and moved to second on a single up the middle from Niki Cook; before moving to third on a single from Johnson. With the bases loaded, Carter tallied a 3 RBI double to center field for the 5-3 score.

Carter and Cook finished with three hits apiece in the game. Carter also added four RBI for Shorter.

Hannah Draper earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts through six innings of work. Kalei Kimbrell pitched the final inning to earn the save, allowing a walk.

Shorter will look to take the series Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm EST in the regular season finale.
