Carrollton, Ga. -- West Georgia swept the doubleheader with the Hawks Saturday afternoon in Carrollton, Ga.; taking the opener 6-3 and the finale 4-2.
Shorter slips to 21-14 on the season and 13-10 in Gulf South Conference play; while the Wolves improve to 24-17 overall and 11-12 in the GSC.
The Hawks took the lead early in game one, scoring twice in the first inning as
Niki Cook and
Kendall Johnson scored on a single up the middle by
Ericka Bynum after reaching on a single and walk, respectively. And, added to it in the third when
Kameron Carter delivered her ninth homerun of the season to left center to make it a 3-0 game.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Wolves struck for six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, 6-3. Shorter threatened in each of the remaining innings, putting runners on base, but stranded them each time.
Payton Lippert took the loss; allowing six runs – four earned – on six hits through 2.1 innings of work.
Kalei Kimbrell came on in relief, pitching the final 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with seven strikeouts.
Game two was back and forth as the teams traded the lead.
West Georgia took opened the scoring in the first inning as Sierra Stella scored on a wild pitch. But, Shorter answered in the third to tie the game. With the bases loaded, Johnson reached a fielder's choice, bringing in
Becca Gomez; who was hit by a pitch to start things off. The Wolves then regained the advantage in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun from Jordan Corbin.
In the fifth, the Hawks tied the game at 2-2 when
Taylor Martin scored on an error by the shortstop. Only to have West Georgia regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Peyton Stallworth and as Marley Stowers scored on a throwing error by Gomez in an attempt to catch Claire Crawford stealing.
Kimbrell took the loss for the Shorter; allowing two runs on one hit with a walk in one inning of work.
Shorter will look to rebound Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Game time is set for 1:00pm from University Field on the campus of the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga.
