Carrollton, Ga. --The Hawks avoided the three-game sweep from West Georgia, winning the series finale 8-0 in six innings.
Shorter improves to 22-14 on the season and 14-10 in the Gulf South Conference play; while the Wolves move to 25-15 overall and 11-13 in the conference.
The Hawks got things going in the second; scoring six runs on two hits and four walks.
Peyton Barthel led the inning off with a walk, and after
Taylor Ann Oda grounded out – moving Barthel to second –
Abi Valdes,
Hannah Draper and
Carson Carriker were each walked consecutively to bring in the game's first run.
Tiffany Holland then brought in Valdes on a single up the middle, and
Niki Cook cleared the bases one batter later with a 3 RBI triple down the left field line to make it a 5-0 game. The final run of the inning came as
Kendall Johnson scored on a double from
Kameron Carter.
Shorter tacked on two more in the sixth when
Maddie Hunt – pinch running for Draper – scored on a sacrifice fly from Johnson and
Taylor Martin – pinch running for Carriker – scored on a single from Carter. The Hawks closed out the win in six innings keeping Wolves scoreless in the bottom of the frame.
Holland finished the day 3-3 at the plate with an RBI; while Carter added two hits and two RBI, and Cook recorded a hit with 3 RBI.
Payton Lippert earned the win for Shorter; pitching a one hit shutout with a walk and four strikeouts through six innings.
Shorter will look to keep the momentum going Thursday, April 7, when they welcome Emory University to Alto Park for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4:30pm.
