ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to Young Harris 18-5 in the final game of the regular season Saturday afternoon.
Shorter slips to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play; while the Mountain Lions secured the regular season championship and hosting rights for the invitational tournament next week with a 3-0 conference mark.
Young Harris took the lead early in the game, scoring three times in the opening ten minutes; before
Crystal Marshall answered for Shorter with a free position goal with 15:22 to play in the half to make it a 3-1 game. But, the Mountain Lions countered with three more goals to extend their lead to 6-1 with 6:48 to play.
Kari Chambers netted a pass from
Alex Abbey at the 4:01 mark to make it a 6-2 game. Only to have Young Harris added four goals in the final four minutes to take a 10-2 lead into the break.
The Mountain Lions made it 11-2 in the opening minutes of the second half, before Shorter added back-to-back goals from
Tiffany Kongpachith and Marshall to make it 11-4 with 27:23 to go. Young Harris made it 12-4 moments later, sparking a 7-1 run to close out the game. Kongpachith added the final goal for Shorter with 20:11 remaining.
In total, the Mountain Lions outshot the Lady Hawks 35-18 and held a 28-16 advantage in shots on goal. Shorter led in draw controls 13-12; while Young Harris recorded 29 ground balls to the Lady Hawks' 27. Turnovers proved costly for Shorter as they committed 32 in the game; while forcing 20 from the visitors.
Both Marshall and Kongpachith tallied two goals each, while Chambers finished with a goal and an assist.
Allie Perry led the effort for the Lady Hawks in ground balls with six in the game. Abbey posted a team high, 3 caused turnovers; while
Catherine Mitchner finished with 10 saves in goal for Shorter.
The Lady Hawks will close out the season next weekend as they take part in the inaugural GSC Women's Lacrosse Invitational Tournament hosted by top-seeded Young Harris. Game times and information will be announced in the coming days.
