Young Harris, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks season came to an end Friday night as they fell to the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Women's Lacrosse Invitational held on the campus of Young Harris College.
Shorter finishes 5-12 on the season and 1-2 in GSC play; while the Chargers will enter Sunday's championship game against Young Harris with a 14-3 overall mark and a 2-1 record in the conference.
UAH opened the game with a goal from Natalie Pachinger with 28:30 to play, and moments later the Lady Hawks had a chance to tie the game only to have the horn sound for lightning in the area; halting the game for nearly an hour and a half. When play finally resumed, Shorter quickly took the lead.
Crystal Marshall netted her first goal of the night with 26:14 to play in the first half, and was followed by a score from the Chargers, before the Lady Hawks posted three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead.
Kari Chambers opened the scoring with 21:33 to play, and was followed by
Alex Abbey two minutes later on a pass from
McKinley Puckett.
Tiffany Kongpachith got in on the action with her first goal of the night with 18:35 to play.
From there, UAH dominated play on the offensive end, turning in a 10-1 run to close out the half. Shorter's final goal of the period came just before the break when Puckett netted a pass from Kongpachith for the 12-5 score at the break.
The second half was much more balanced, as the Chargers added five goals and the Lady Hawks struck for four. Megan Hart made it a 13-5 game in UAH's favor in the opening minutes of the half, before Chambers tallied her second goal of the night with 26:07 to go. Hart and Pachinger then went back-to-back for the Chargers to bring their advantage to 15-6, before Kongpachith turned in consecutive score to cut into the lead. UAH's final two goals of the game came from Elizabeth Brown, while Marshall netted a final goal for Shorter for the 17-9 final score.
In total, Alabama Huntsville outshot the Lady Hawks 33-22, and held a 27-15 advantage in shots on goal. The Chargers added 20 ground balls to Shorter's 10; while the Lady Hawks owned a 14-13 advantage in draw controls.
Kongpachith finished with three goals and an assist for the night; while Marshall and Chambers chipped in with two goals each.
Catherine Mitchner finished with ten saves.
