Softball sweeps Florida Tech in Super Regional Rematch

Melbourne, Fla. -- When the two teams faced off last it was with World Series hopes on the line, this time the stakes weren't as high, but for Shorter the final results were the same as the Hawks swept the doubleheader with Florida Tech Tuesday afternoon. Shorter earned the win 6-2 in the opener, and took the finale 9-6.

With the wins, the Hawks move to 12-6 on the season; while the Panthers slip to 21-8 overall.

Shorter got things going in the first inning of game one as Peyton Barthel brought in Kendall Johnson and Tiffany Holland on a 2 RBI single to left. Barthel, along with Ericka Bynum, then came in one batter later as Taylor Ann Oda tallied her first hit of the season – a triple to right field, before scoring herself on a throwing error by the right fielder to take a 5-0 lead.

Florida Tech cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning with a run on two hits to make it a 5-1 game. And, added a run in the third to bring the score to 5-2. Before, the Hawks added a final run in the fourth for the 6-2. Holland accounted for Shorter's run as she came in an error by the third baseman after reaching base on a single early in the inning.

Both Barthel and Oda finished 2-4 with two RBI; while both of Oda's hits were for extra bases as she added double in the fifth.

Payton Lippert earned the win, her fifth of the season; pitching the complete game. Through seven innings of work she allowed one earned run on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Again, Shorter got things going in the first inning of game two, as Barthel delivered her first homerun of the season – a three run shot to straightaway center field – to bring in Kameron Carter and Johnson.

The Hawks made it 8-0 in the third with five runs on four hits. Niki Cook led off the inning with a single, and moved into scoring position on a ground out by Holland; before making it to third on a single from Johnson and coming to score the inning's first run on a sacrifice fly from Carter. With two outs, Barthel reached base on a single, and moved to second when Oda was hit by a pitch. One batter later, Bynum turned in a 2 RBI double, plating Johnson and Barthel and moving Oda to third. Both Oda and Bynum then scored on an error by the centerfielder to bring Shorter's lead to 8-0.

Down to what could have been their last at bat, the Panthers rallied, to keep the game alive when they scored six runs on three hits; while also taking advantage of two Shorter errors to make it a 8-6 game in the fifth inning. The Hawks added a run in the seventh for the 9-6 final score on an RBI single from Carson Carriker.

Barthel finished with three hits and three RBI in the game, to bring her total to five hits and five RBI on the day. Cook and Johnson added two hits in game two, for a total of four each on the afternoon.

Hannah Draper earned the win for Shorter, allowing five runs – all unearned – on two hits with four walks through 4.2 innings of work.

Shorter will look to keep the momentum going Wednesday when they take on Rollins College in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00pm.
