ROME -- Mississippi College earned the series win over the Hawks with a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Alto Park.
Shorter slips to 10-6 on the season and 7-5 in Gulf South Conference play; while the Lady Choctaws improve to 13-9 overall and 5-7 in the GSC.
The Hawks got on the board first as
Kameron Carter notched her fourth homer of the year with a two-run shot over the left centerfield wall. MC answered, however, with a run in the second to cut the lead in half and tied the game in the third as Katherine Lee scored on an error by
Niki Cook.
Shorter regained the lead in the bottom of the third when
Maddie Hunt scored on a single from
Tiffany Holland. Errors once again plagued the Hawks as the Lady Choctaws were able to score three times in the fourth on two Shorter miscues; earning the win 5-3.
Carlie Sargent recorded the win for MC, turning a complete game performance; allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Payton Lippert took the loss for the Hawks; pitching four innings in relief, allowing five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Holland tallied two hits on the day; finishing 2-3 at the plate. While Carter's lone hit of the game was a homerun.
Shorter will look to turn things around this week as they travel to Florida for two non-conference doubleheaders. First taking on Florida Tech, in a rematch of last season's NCAA DII South Super Regional, on Tuesday at 1:00pm and on Wednesday against Rollins beginning at 6:00pm. The Hawks will close out the trip with a three game series at Valdosta State.
