Ramos Lifts Hawks Over Choctaws

ROME, Ga. - Jacob Ramos' solo shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning led the Shorter Hawks over the Mississippi College Choctaws, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

"That's one of those moments that will stay with him a long time," said head coach Wes Timmons. "He's put in countless hours in the cage."

The visiting Choctaws managed two runs in the opening inning thanks to four singles but were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest. The Hawks scored in both the third and fourth innings to tie the game at two.

In the third, Ramos walked and advanced to second after Sheldon Drake singled. With two on, Dustin Lawson doubled, batting in Ramos. The following inning, back-to-back two-out doubles by SU gave the team its second run of the contest. After Brian Cabrera doubled, Harrison Hatfield hit the ball down the left field line and made it safely to second, allowing Cabrera to score.

The scored remained 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth when Ramos hit what would become the game winning homer with two outs, putting the Hawks ahead for good, 3-2.

Rylan Dolan received the win for Shorter, giving up three hits and no earned runs over 3.1 innings. Reece Roach pitched the ninth inning and earned the save.

The Hawks had 10 hits on the day, while Mississippi College batters hit safely nine times.

Shorter is back over .500 with a 10-9 record (4-5 GSC). The team returns to action on Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial University. First pitch is set for 2 PM EST from Harrogate, Tennessee.
