Softball splits with Mississippi College

ROME -- The Hawks split the Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Mississippi College Saturday afternoon; taking the opener 3-2 in ten innings, before falling in the finale 8-0 in five innings.

Shorter moves to 10-5 on the season and 7-4 in the GSC; while the Lady Choctaws go to 12-8 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Mississippi College took the lead in game one with a run in the third inning as Cheyenne Matthews brought in Alexia Harmon on an RBI single. The Lady Hawks answered in the six to take the lead 2-1 as Maddie Hunt scored on a single from Tiffany Holland, and Niki Cook came in on a double from Kendall Johnson.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Lady Choctaws added a run in the seventh. Shorter threatened in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't push a run across and stranded a runner at second.

Both teams had base runners in the eighth and ninth, but neither could find the go ahead; pushing the game to the tenth where the tiebreaker rule was put into play. For MC, Ty Buckley started the inning at second, but was left standing there as the Lady Choctaws were sat down in order. For Shorter, Abi Valdes began the inning at second, and moved to third on a bunt single from Hunt. Cook followed with a single to load the bases, and after Holland flew out, Valdes came in to score on a passed ball to give the Hawks the victory, 3-2.

Payton Lippert earned the win; pitching a complete game performance. Through ten innings she allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and a season high, nine strikeouts. MC pitcher, Carlie Sargent, posted a complete game performance as well; allowing three runs - two earned - on nine hits with a walk and ten strikeouts.

Cook was 3-5 for the game with a stolen base; while both, Holland and Hunt added two hits apiece.

In game two, the Lady Choctaws capitalized on four Hawk miscues during the fourth inning to earn the win 8-0 with all runs coming once two outs were made.

Savannah Thomas tallied both of Shorter's hits for the game, while the Lady Hawks only other baserunner came as Cook reached on a walk in the first inning.

Hannah Draper took the loss for Shorter, pitching 3.2 innings. During which all eight runs scored, but only one was earned due to the errors. She moves to 3-2 on the season. Kalei Kimbrell added 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Shorter will look to get back in the win column and earn the series win in the final game of the slate, Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm at Alto Park.
