ROME -- The Lady Hawks snapped a three game losing skid with a 15-9 win over Chowan at Ben Brady Field Monday afternoon.
Shorter moved to 3-9 on the season; while Chowan moves to 2-10 overall.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game's first four goals.
Kari Chambers began the day with a score just twenty-eight seconds into the contest on a pass from
Anna Kate Dulaney and was followed second later by
Aubrey Geiger when she netted the first of four goals on the afternoon.
Crystal Marshall made it 4-0 in the favor of Shorter with back-to-back goals in the span of a minute.
Mackenzie Reid broke the scoreless streak for Chowan when she found the back of the net on a pass from Adriea Herndon with 22:58 to play in the quarter. Only to have the Lady Hawks take a 6-0 run to take a 10-1 lead. Geiger started things off with her second goal of the day at the 22:04 mark, and was followed by
Alex Abbey moments later.
Tiffany Kongpachith got in the on the action with a goal of her own with 15:30 to go, before Chambers, Geiger, and Marshall closed the run with consecutive scores for Shorter. In the final minute of the game Reid added two goals for Chowan, while Dulaney struck for the Lady Hawks for the 11-3 halftime score.
Chowan opened the second half with four goals to cut Shorter's lead to four, 11-7, keeping the Lady Hawks scoreless through the first twenty minutes of the frame. Marshall then answered with her fourth goal of the game with 10:04 to play to bring the Lady Hawks' lead to five, 12-7, and five minutes later Geiger made it 13-7 with her fourth goal of the afternoon. Through the final four minutes both teams added two goals, for the 15-9 final score, with Shorter's coming from Abbey and Marshall at the 2:25 and 00:13 marks, respectively.
In total, the Lady Hawks outshot Chowan 30-20, and held a 26-16 advantage in shots on goal; while also holding a 28-23 margin in ground balls and winning 17 of 26 draws in the game.
Individually, Marshall led the offensive effort with five goals; while Geiger had a hand in six points – four goals, 2 assists. In addition to her two goals on the afternoon, Abbey caused four turnovers for Shorter, and
Sarah Curlee led the effort in ground balls with five for the game. Shorter goalie,
Catherine Mitchner, posted six saves in the game.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Sunday afternoon, April 3, as they take on Rollins College at 11:00am at North Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga.
