Long balls lift Hawks over No. 10 UAH

ROME -- The Hawks held off the sweep from UAH, downing the NFCA's 10th ranked team 9-1 in five innings.

Shorter improves to 18-10 overall with the win and 13-8 in the conference play; while the Chargers go to 30-7 on the season and 16-5 in the GSC.

Kaitlyn Bannister put the visitors on the board in the top of the first inning when she came in to score on a single from Abby Roberts, but that was all the offense the Chargers would get as the Hawks held them scoreless through the remainder of the contest; while adding nine runs of their own to earn the win.

Savannah Thomas tied the game in the second inning as she plated Kameron Carter when the pair tallied back to back doubles. Thomas then gave Shorter the lead in the fourth when she led off the inning with a solo homerun. But, the Hawks weren't done there as they loaded the bases for Kendall Johnson; who blasted a grand slam to left center field to bring Shorter's advantage to 6-1.

Carter led off the fifth with a single, and moved to third when Thomas doubled, and the pair came in as Peyton Barthel tallied a homerun of her own for the afternoon; a three run shot to straightaway center the end the game with the 9-1 final score.

Payton Lippert earned the win for Shorter, pitching the complete game; allowing one run - unearned - on five hits with four strikeouts.

Thomas went 3-3 at the plate with a homer and two doubles; while Carter and Barthel each tallied two hits.

The Hawks will be back in action Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm when they welcome Miles College to Alto Park for a non-conference doubleheader.
