Hawks fall to No. 10 UAH

ROME -- It was a tough day for the Hawks against No. 10 Alabama Huntsville Friday afternoon as they dropped a pair of Gulf South Conference games to the Chargers. In Game 1, Shorter came back from an early deficit to force extra innings, but in the end fell to UAH 5-4. In Game 2, the lone run of the game belonged to the visitors as the Chargers turned in a 1-0 win to close out the day.

Shorter slips to 18-12 on the season and 12-8 in conference play; while UAH improves to 30-6 overall and 16-4 in the GSC.

In Game 1, the Chargers took the lead in the first inning as two runs scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch, respectively. Savannah Smith then came in on an error in the second inning to bring the score to 3-0 in the favor of UAH. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the second with a run of their own to make it a 3-1 game as Niki Cook scored on a sacrifice fly from Kendall Johnson.

UAH pushed a run across in the fourth to bring their lead back to three as Smith came in on a single from Haley Thompson. But, Shorter again countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Ericka Bynum scored when Sierra Cagle hit into a fielder's choice. In the fifth, however, the Hawks took advantage of two Charger errors to tie the game. With Tiffany Holland at first, Johnson reached on an error by third baseman, Kaitlyn Bannister, and advanced to third when the ball caromed into the outfield – Holland came home – and in an attempt to throw out Holland the ball got away from first baseman, Abby Roberts, allowing Johnson to also come in for the game tying run.

Both teams had chances to earn the win in the remaining innings, but it was UAH that struck first, scoring a run in the ninth to take the lead. Shorter was retired in order in the bottom of the inning for the 5-4 final score.

In Game 2, the lone run of the contest came in the top of the seventh as Sarah Jordan scored on a Kelly Campbell single giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Despite chances, Shorter stranded runners in four of the seven innings. Their best chance at a run came in the third as Holland and Cook reached with one out, but despite a hard hit ball, Johnson lined into a double play to end the inning.

Payton Lippert took the loss in Game 1, allowing three earned runs on ten hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Hannah Draper took the loss in the Game 2, pitching 6.1 innings; allowing one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Bynum tallied two hits in each game to lead the Hawks; while Cook and Peyton Barthel added two in Game 1.

Shorter will look to take the final game of the series Saturday afternoon against the Chargers, game time is set for 12:00pm.
