Hawks Fall to Railsplitters at State Mutual Stadium

The Shorter Hawks fell to the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters, 14-3, on Wednesday night.

The non-conference matchup took place under the lights at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves, Class A Minor League Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.

The Railsplitters scored two runs in the top of the first as four batters reached via a base on balls or were hit by a pitch. An rbi single and sacrifice fly gave the visitors a 2-0 lead early in the contest.

LMU added a pair of runs in the second inning thanks to a double and error on the Hawks defense. Shorter battled back during its half of the second, scoring two runs to cut the Railsplitters lead in half.

Greg Gladden led off the bottom of the inning with a single and advanced to second base, before reaching third on Raul Cortes' groundout. Jerry Liang's rbi fielder's choice scored Gladden. With one out, Austin Miller singled, giving the Hawks runners on first and second. Miller and Liang each advanced one base due to a balk, with Liang crossing home plate when Jacob Ramos grounded out to third base.

After two innings of play, Shorter trailed 4-2. Lincoln Memorial added two runs in the third thanks to Seth Hunt's two-rbi double. The Hawks scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third when Patrick Sanderson doubled down the left field line and came around to score when Gladden singled.

The Railsplitters scored eight runs over the final six innings - including four in the fifth, to claim a 14-3 victory over Shorter.

The Hawks are now 10-17 overall, while Lincoln Memorial improves to 18-8 on the season.

Shorter returns to action on Friday, March 25, when it welcomes Alabama Huntsville to Rome. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon EST from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
