Hawks complete three game sweep of Lee

ROME -- The Hawks completed the sweep of longtime rival, Lee University, Sunday afternoon; taking the game 8-3.

Shorter moves to 18-10 on the season and 12-6 in the Gulf South Conference with the win; while the Flames slip to 12-20 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

The Hawks took the lead early in the game, as Kameron Carter delivered her sixth homerun of the season to left center, bringing in Kendall Johnson for the 2-0 score. Only to have Lee cut the lead in half in the next inning when AnnaBeth Pruett scored on a single by Lexie Dean, but the Hawks answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to maintain the advantage as Taylor Martin scored on a wild pitch on the strikeout of Maddie Hunt for the 3-1 score.

In the third, Shorter tacked on some insurance as Taylor Ann Oda brought in Johnson on a ground out to make it a 4-1 game.

The score stood until the sixth when the Flames threatened, scoring twice to cut the Hawks' lead to one, 4-3. But, again, Shorter answered with a big sixth inning of its own, scoring four times for the 8-3 final score. Oda led things off with a double to deep right center, and moved to second on a single down the right field line by Martin, and came in to score on a single from Savannah Thomas. Martin also scored on the play, thanks to a throwing error by the leftfielder. Thomas then scored on a single from Hunt; who came in to score the game's final run on a single from Tiffany Holland. All in all, the Hawks tallied four runs on five hits.

Payton Lippert earned the win, posting six strong innings, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kalei Kimbrell came in for the final inning, retiring the Flames in order.

Carter, Martin and Hunt each tallied two hits on the day for Shorter; while Carter and Hunt also posted two RBI each.

Shorter will be back in action this weekend as they welcome Alabama Huntsville for a three game series. Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00pm; with Saturday's single game finale also set to begin at 1:00. The midweek doubleheader with Miles originally scheduled for this Wednesday, March 23, has been moved to next Wednesday, March 30, beginning at 3:00pm.
