Hartsville, S.C. -- Despite keeping things close the Hawks couldn't overcome the Cobras Saturday night, falling to Coker 13-11 on the road.
Coker (2-6) opened the scoring with the game's first goal with 11:36 to go, but Shorter (2-6) answered almost immediately to tie the game as
Matt Kristiansen netted his first goal of the night. The Cobras countered with three consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead, but Kristiansen was there once again, finding the back of the net twice in the span of four minutes to cut the lead to 4-3 with 2:09 to play in the quarter. Coker added a final goal for the frame with nine second to play, only to have the Hawks take a quick win on the face-off to a score by Kristiansen to move to the second period with a 5-4 score in the Cobras advantage.
Coker opened the second quarter with four consecutive goals to increase their lead to 9-4, before the Hawks answer with a four goal run of their own to cut the lead to one. Kristiansen opened the run with a score with 5:09 to play in the half, and was followed by goals from
Andrew King at 4:18 and
Tyler Kristiansen at 1:31 to head to the break down by two.
Shorter kept the run going in the opening minutes of the second half as M. Kristiansen added his sixth goal of the night with 13:48 to play in the third quarter. Only to have the Cobras take a four point lead after turning in three goals over the final minutes of the quarter to head to the final fifteen minutes with the 12-8 advantage.
M. Kristiansen tallied his final two goals of the night – for eight in the game – to open the fourth quarter and make it a 12-10 game. Each team added a final goal in the last three minutes for the 13-11 final score, with the Hawks' goal coming from King on a pass from
Zachery Dirkse.
In total, Shorter outshot Coker 41-36, while the Cobras held an 18-17 advantage in shots on goal. Coker narrowly led in the ground balls 34-33, and won 13 of 24 face-offs.
Individually for the Hawks,
Joshua Skinner tallied all 11 of Shorter's face-off wins, while also collecting a team high 7 ground balls.
Garry Robinson tallied five saves in goal for the Hawks; while
Michael Santry turned in a season high 7 caused turnovers.
Shorter will be back in action Thursday, March 24, when they welcome Colorado State-Pueblo to Ben Brady Field for a 7:00pm start.
