ROME, Ga. - The Shorter Hawks baseball team fell to the Georgia College Bobcats, 7-2, in non-conference action at home on Wednesday afternoon.
Each team went down in order in the first inning before scoring in the second. The Bobcats Brandon Purcell reached first base on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Shorter trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the inning, but
Dustin Lawson's home run over the left field wall tied the game at one.
Georgia College extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the third. An rbi double, followed by a 2-rbi home run over the left field fence gave the Bobcats a three run advantage.
GC managed one run in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, but
Blaze Vazquez's solo shot brought Shorter within three runs, 5-2.
Things were quiet during the fifth and sixth innings, but in the seventh, the Bobcats scored twice, thanks to a pair of hits, and two errors by the SU defense.
Down 7-2, the Hawks got their third hit of the game off the bat of
Steven Maier in the bottom of the ninth. Long advanced to second on a fielder's choice, giving Shorter one on with one out, but a double play ended the game as SU fell by a five-run margin.
Reece Roach took the loss for SU, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up three earned runs. Bryce Bush earned the win for Georgia College.
The loss drops the Hawks record to 7-9, while Georgia College improves to 7-7 with the victory.
Shorter will be back in action on Saturday against Gulf South Conference opponent Mississippi College. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon EST from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex in Rome, Georgia.
