ROME, Ga. – The Hawks dropped both games of a Gulf South Conference double header against the Lee Flames, 6-1, and 8-4.
In the first game, the Flames scored first, as one runner crossed the plate in the top of the opening inning. A leadoff single, followed by a walk, gave Lee two runners on with no outs. A two-out double gave the Flames a 1-0 advantage. Lee added two more runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to a three hits – a double and two singles.
The Hawks scored their lone run in bottom of the third.
Brian Cabrera singled and stole second, before taking third on a passed ball.
Dustin Lawson walked with two outs, giving SU two runners on. A double steal allowed Cabrera to cross home plate, bringing the Hawks within two, 3-1.
The Flames added three runs over the seventh and eighth innings. A solo home run gave Lee a 4-1 lead, before three hits – a double and pair of singles – helped the Flames take a 6-1 advantage over the Hawks, which they held for the remainder of the game.
Mason Long took the loss for Shorter, giving up six hits and three earned runs over three innings pitched. Lee's Art Vidrio received the win, pitching a complete game.
The long ball hurt Shorter in the second game, as the home team fell, 8-4.
Lee hit two home runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. A three-run shot in the top of the third allowed the Flames to push their advantage to 6-0, but Shorter fought back during its half of the inning, pulling within four. With two outs,
Harrison Hatfield walked and
Steven Maier singled, putting two on for
Dustin Lawson. Lawson's two-rbi double off the center field wall scored both runners, cutting Lee's deficit to 6-2.
A two-run homer in the top of the seventh made the score 8-2 in favor of the Flames, but the Hawks refused to go down without a fight. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Austin Miller doubled down the left field line and was batted in when
Jerry Liang also doubled. Liang stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Flames catcher, making the score 8-4 in favor of Lee. Although Shorter managed two runs in the final* inning, it got no closer, falling by a four run margin.
Jacob Farmer received the loss for the Hawks. Justin Alleman earned the win for the Flames, pitching a complete game.
The losses move Shorter's record to 10-15 overall and 4-10 in the GSC. Lee improves to 14-12 with a 6-8 mark in conference action.
The two teams play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 PM EST from the Ledbetter Baseball Complex in Rome, Georgia. Â
