Hawks Bow Out of GSC Tournament

Huntsville, Ala. - The Shorter Hawks fell to the Alabama Huntsville Chargers in the Gulf South Conference tournament quarterfinals, 86-82, on Tuesday night.

Shorter controlled the game, leading for a total of 35:26. The men from Rome held a 10-point advantage at the half, 47-37. SU continued to lead well into the second half, taking their largest lead of the contest, 75-63, with 5:35 left in the game.

Although the Hawks led by double digits, the momentum began to swing in favor of the Alabama Huntsville late in the final half.

Down 12, the Chargers ended the game on a 23-7 run. Top-seeded UAH took the lead with 1:39 left in the game and held on a four-point victory over the eighth seeded visitors, 86-82.

Shorter attempted only 15 free throws in the game making nine. UAH took 33 shots at the charity stripe, converting 28 of those attempts. The Hawks shot 48.1% from the floor, while the Chargers managed slightly better, hitting 31 of 60 attempts for a 51.8% mark. The two squads both secured 32 rebounds.

Trevor McDade led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting. Phil Taylor added 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Hawks, while Alijah Bennett scored 15.  Seab Webster and Greg Gardner each scored 21 points for Alabama Huntsville.

With the defeat, Shorter bows out of the Gulf South Conference tournament. The Hawks complete their 2015-16 campaign with a 14-15 record.
