Carter homers twice, but Hawks fall to UNA

ROME -- Kameron Carter homered twice, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell to No. 8 North Alabama 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Alto Park.

Shorter slips to 9-4 on the season with the loss, and 6-3 in the Gulf South Conference. While the Lions improve to 21-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play.

The Hawks got things going in the first inning with two outs as Kendall Johnson earned a walk and Carter followed with a homer to make it a 2-0 game. Before making it 3-0 in the second when Maddie Hunt came in on a single from Tiffany Holland, after tripling to start the inning.

The lead was short lived, however, as North Alabama answered in the top of the third with three runs of their own. Madeline Lee doubled to lead off the inning and was followed by a Bailey Nelson walk, both then scored one batter later as Courtney Shields delivered a double to left field to cut the lead 3-2. Shields moved to third on a ground out from Reagan Tittle, and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Brooklyn Clark to tie the game.

Both teams added runs in the fifth, UNA tallied three and the Hawks two, to make it a 6-5 game. All of North Alabama's runs scored on a Clark homer, while both of Shorter's came in on Carter's second long ball of the day. Lee added a homer in the sixth for the Lions for the 7-5 final score.

Payton Lippert pitched the complete game for Shorter, taking the loss – her second in as many games to even her season record at 3-3. Through seven innings of work she allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

In addition to the homeruns, Carter added a single in the third to finish 3-3 with four RBI.

Shorter will return to action next weekend, March 5-6, as they host Mississippi College in a Gulf South Conference series at Alto Park. Game are set to begin each day at 1:00pm EST.
