Montevallo, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks earned their first win of the season and their first win as a member of the Gulf South Conference Saturday afternoon, topping the University of Montevallo 17-8 on the road.
Allie Perry got things going for Shorter, who opened the game with four consecutive goals when she netted her first goal of the game just 48 seconds into the game.
McKinley Puckett followed with three goals before ten minutes had ticked off the clock to bring the Lady Hawks advantage to 4-0. The Falcons, however, countered with three unanswered goals from Maddie Ellis to cut into Shorter's lead and take the game to halftime with a 4-3 score.
After the break, Montevallo tied the game on a goal from Lexie Wright, but the Lady Hawks were there to regain the lead as Puckett and
Kari Chambers went back to back to make it a 6-4 game in Shorter's favor.
From there the Lady Hawks never trailed, adding eleven more goals before time ran out. Ellis made it a one point game with 19:51 to go, but
Crystal Marshall's first score of the game sparked a five point run for Shorter to bring their lead to 11-5 with 14:26 to go. In addition to Marshall, Puckett and Perry also added goals during the span; while
Tiffany Kongpachith added two assists.
With 13:31 to go, the Falcons broke the scoreless streak with back-to-back scores to make it an 11-7 game, but that was as close as they'd get for the remainder of the contest. Shorter tacked on another 5-0 run to make it a 16-7 game with 5:45 to play, as Kongpachith, Chambers, Marshall and Perry each found the back of the net during a four minute span – Chambers twice.
Montevallo's final goal of the game came with 2:03 to play from Ellis, and the Lady Hawks added a final score with 12 seconds to go for the 17-8 final score.
Catherine Mitchner received her first win of the season, making eight saves through sixty minutes of play.
All told, Puckett finished with five goals on the day, while Marshall added four, and both, Chambers and Perry chipped in with three each. And, in addition to one goal on the afternoon, Kongpachith added three assists for Shorter.
As a team, the Lady Hawks outshot the Falcons 36-21, holding a 32-16 advantage in shots on goal; while also winning 17 draws to Montevallo's nine.
