ROME -- The Lady Hawks mounted a late comeback, but it wasn't enough as Shorter fell to Alabama Huntsville 12-10 in the first Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse game Wednesday evening at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter slips to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the GSC; while the Chargers improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Alabama Huntsville scored first, taking a 1-0 lead with 24:52 to play in the first half, but the Lady Hawks answered seven minutes later to tie the game on a score from
Kari Chambers. The goal, however, was Shorter's only goal of the half as the remaining minutes belonged to the Chargers. Through the final half of the period, UAH struck for five more goals to take a 6-1 lead into the break.
The Chargers opened the second frame with four consecutive goals to make it a 10-1 game, before Chambers answered again for her second goal of the game on a pass from
McKinley Puckett with twenty minutes to go. Nicole Federovitch provided a score for UAH, but Shorter tallied two of their own on back-to-back goals from
Tiffany Kongpachith and
Crystal Marshall to spark an 8-1 run to close out the game and cut the lead to 12-10.
Through the final minutes, Marshall and Chambers added two goals apiece, while Kongpachith and Puckett chipped in with one each.
In total, UAH outshot the Lady Hawks 31-20; while Shorter held the advantage 16-12 in the second half. The Lady Hawks did, however, lead in groundballs (39-29) and in draw controls (15-9) in the game.
Individually, Shorter 'keeper
Catherine Mitchner tallied 10 saves in goal; while also causing three turnovers and scooping up three groundballs. In addition to four goals on the day, Chambers added a team high seven groundballs and caused a turnover.
The Lady Hawks will go for their first win of the season Saturday as they take on the University of Montevallo in Gulf South Conference action beginning at 2:00pm EST.
