ROME -- The Lady Hawks dropped a tough one Saturday afternoon, falling to Coker 14-11 to move to 0-3 on the year.
Haley McCusker got the scoring started for the Cobras, netting the first goal of the game with 28:20 to play in the half. But, Shorter answered with three consecutive goals to take the lead. The first two came back-to-back from
Crystal Marshall, before
Tiffany Kongpachith netted a pass from
Allie Perry to bring the score to 3-1 in the Lady Hawks' favor. Coker countered with three of their own to make it a 4-3 game. Perry then tied things up with a goal of her own on a free position attempt with 4:45 to go. Only to have Ashlynn Burgett find the back of the net two minutes later to give Coker a 5-4 advantage at the break.
Down by one at the intermission, Shorter looked for the equalizer, but the Cobras began pulling away. McCusker opened the frame with her second goal of the day, before
Kari Chambers netted a score for Shorter to maintain the one point difference. Coker made it an 8-5 game at the 20:32 mark on a shot from Mackenzie Baker, but the Hawks answered with a 5-2 run to tie the game with 9:00 minutes to go. During the span
Alex Abbey netted her first goal of the season and Marshall tallied four goals, including the one to tie the game. Faith Kent scored three times for the Cobras in the final minutes, while Baker added a third goal for the game. Chambers tallied Shorter's final goal of the day with 59 seconds to play for the 14-11 final score.
In total, the Lady Hawks were outshot 37-21 and 30-19 in shots on goal. While, Shorter controlled 14 draws to Coker's 12, and picked up 27 ground balls.
Goalkeeper,
Catherine Mitchner, made 16 saves in the game. Both Perry and Marshall collected six ground balls, while Abbey and Chambers each caused three turnovers.
Shorter will return to action on Wednesday as they look for their first win of the season and begin Gulf South Conference play against Alabama Huntsville at Ben Brady Field. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
