After being named Gulf South Conference player of the week on Tuesday,
Phil Taylor added national player of the week honors from the Basketball Writers Association on Wednesday thanks in part to his record breaking performance last week against Carver.
The senior, averaged 47 points per game last week, helping the Hawks to a 1-1 record; while tallying 62 points against Carver to shatter the Shorter and Gulf South Conference single-game record.
Against the Cougars, Taylor went 19-34 from the floor, including 9-15 from 3-point range. He also converted 15-19 free throw attempts, added six rebounds and dished out five assists with no turnovers though 39 minutes of play.
He followed up the performance in the Hawks' conference opener with a 32-point night at longtime rival, Lee. Against the Flames, he finished 7-18 from the field with 5-9 coming from beyond the arc. While going 13-19 from the foul line for the game and adding five rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Taylor currently leads Division II in scoring, averaging 35.8 points per game; while ranking second in 3-pointers per game with a 4.6 average.
The Hawks return to action Friday, December 9, when they host Hiwassee College in the final non-conference game of the season. Tipoff is set for 5:00pm from the Winthrop-King Centre.
