Lady Hawks Squeak Past Mississippi College in Overtime

ROME, Ga. – For the second time in as many games, the Lady Hawks found themselves victorious, this time defeating the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws in overtime, 82-78.

Shorter is undefeated in two overtime contests this season. In late November, the Lady Hawks defeated North Georgia in triple overtime, 79-71.

In the first quarter against the Lady Choctaws, the two teams battled back and forth in a tight game. Roni Richardson's three-pointer with 4:36 left in the period gave Shorter a two-point lead, but Mississippi College quickly tied the game.

The Lady Hawks broke the tie when Taylor Adams scored the final four points of the opening quarter, giving her team a 15-11 advantage after ten minutes of play.

Denise Newton and Domonique Clune extended Shorter's lead to six just three minutes into the second quarter.

The Lady Choctaws (3-3, 1-2 GSC) shaved a single point off SU's advantage, but Richardson scored five consecutive points to push the Lady Hawks (3-5, 2-1 GSC) lead to 10 with four minutes remaining until the half.

Late free throws by MC made the score 32-24 in favor of Shorter at the intermission.

Mississippi College cut the Lady Hawks led in half just four minutes into the third quarter, but BreAnna Thompson and Jackie Hudson combined for six points, pushing the home team's lead back to 10, 46-36.

"Jackie had some huge second half baskets," head coach Vic Mitchell stated.

Shorter looked as if it might blow the game open, but the Lady Choctaws used 13-3 run to tie the game with under one minute left in the period.

Clune converted a three-point play, while Richardson answered a Mississippi College basket, giving SU a three-point advantage at the end of the third.

The two players combined for 21 of Shorter's 31 points of the bench.

The final quarter saw the Lady Choctaws take a one-point lead with 5:03 remaining. Over the final minutes, the teams traded the lead five times.

Adams hit two free throws with 15 seconds left on the clock, but Mississippi College's Ashley Minor tied the game at 69 and forced overtime.

The Lady Hawks opened up a six-point lead in OT, as Raven Fair, Adams, and Kayla Tillie all scored.

The Lady Choctaws managed to pull within two, but Adams' free throws with 10 seconds remaining secured an 82-78 Shorter victory.

Adams led Shorter with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Clune added 11, while Brittany Greene scored 10 points, all in the second half and overtime. Kelley Allen scored 19 points to go along with 17 boards for Mississippi College.

Shorter shot only 37.3%, but the Lady Choctaws managed to make only 40.3% of their attempts. The two teams combined to shoot 53 of 63 at the free throw line.

The Lady Hawks will return to action on December 31st at West Alabama. Tipoff of the Gulf South Conference matchup between SU and Tigers of West Alabama is set for 3 p.m. from Livingston, Alabama.
