ATLANTA, Ga. – The Hawks men's basketball team defeated Clark Atlanta, 75-70, on Thursday night, remaining unbeaten with a 4-0 record.
Three of Shorter's first four field goals came from behind the arc and the visitors jumped out to an 11-4 lead just 3:09 into the game.
Mike Wickliff's three-pointer with 14:03 remaining in the half began a 9-2 run, which extended the Hawks lead to 17, 27-10. Four different players scored during the run, with
Cole Birchfield's five points leading the way.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Phil Taylor and
Warren Helligar pushed Shorter's lead over the 20-point mark with under eight minutes left until halftime.
Helligar's field goal gave the Hawks a 33-12 lead and the team never led by less than 20 points for the remainder of the period.
Shorter's largest lead of the first half came with 3:42 to play when
Eric Ross' dunk put the Hawks up 41-17, but over the closing minutes Clark Atlanta scored four unanswered points.
The Panthers run cut the Shorter to lead to 20, 41-21, at the half.
Clark Atlanta opened the second half on a 5-0 run to pull within 15, but Taylor converted from beyond the arc, giving the Hawks an 18-point lead.
After Shorter's advantage remained constant for a short time, the Panthers used a 17-2 run to pull within 5 at the second media timeout of the half. Birchfield's jumper accounted for the only SU points during Clark Atlanta's run.
After the timeout, Birchfield immediately drained a three-pointer, only to have the Panthers answer on their next possession, making it a five-point game with 11:10 remaining.
Over the remainder of the game, the Hawks led by as many as nine and did not allow Clark Atlanta to cut the lead to less than four points.
The 75-70 victory is Shorter's fourth straight victory. Taylor fell two points shy of 30, scoring 28 to lead the Hawks. Helligar contributed 16 points, while Birchfield added 15. Ross led Shorter's rebounding efforts, pulling down 15 boards.
Four Panthers scored in double figures. Anthony Williams led the team with 17.
Shorter returns to action on December 3rd when it opens Gulf South Conference play at Lee University. Tipoff between the Hawks and Flames is set for 7 p.m. from Cleveland, Tennessee.
