Jackson, Tenn. -- The Lady Hawks got back into the win column Tuesday evening, upending Union 3-1 on the road.
Shorter improves to 16-6 overall and 11-3 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Lady Bulldogs slip to 8-17 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.
The Lady Hawks got off to a good start, taking the first two sets by 25-17 and 25-23 scores, respectively; before falling in the third set 28-26. Shorter bounced back in the fourth set to earn the victory with a 25-23 win.
Elizabeth Dowd led the attack for the Lady Hawks with 16 kills on the night; while both,
Madeline Munroe (11) and
Tiffani Estep (10) also reach double-figures.
Kelsi Jones just missed joining the trio with nine kills for the match.
Cheyenne Frady tallied 27 assists for the game, to go along with
Alli Bell's 18. At the service line, the Lady Hawks tallied six aces on the night with Dowd and
Morgan Cleveland each recording two.
On the receiving end, Dowd led the effort to complete the double-double for the night with 17 digs. She was joined in double-figures by
Cheyenne McLemore (13) and Frady (11). Estep – who was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week this week for her 16 blocks on the weekend – added two on the night to remain in first place for the conference with 1.05 per match.
BreAnna Thompson also added two blocks for the match.
Shorter will return home this weekend to host West Florida and Valdosta State on Friday, October 28, and Saturday, October 29, respectively. Friday's match with the Argos is set to begin at 6:00 PM ET; while Sunday's contest with the Blazers is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET.
