Wolves' long-range touch downs Hawks, 108-90

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite a career-high 34 points from Chris Daniels, the Shorter Hawks ran into a hot-shooting West Georgia squad Monday night as the Wolves, thanks to some pinpoint accuracy from three-point range, handed the Hawks a 108-90 Gulf South Conference defeat at The Coliseum.

The setback gives the Hawks a 6-8 overall record and a 1-7 GSC slate heading into a pair of home conference games over the next week, the first coming Saturday when Shorter hosts Mississippi College at 2 p.m. and next Monday at 8 p.m. when Delta State comes to the Winthrop-King Centre.

West Georgia, now 9-4 and 6-2, ended the night hitting 15 of 28 three-pointers which provide to be the difference in the game as Shorter converted just four of 16 treys.

The Wolves quickly gained the upper-hand from the opening tip by finding their shooting touch as West Georgia connected on 11 of its first 14 shots, including canning three of four three-pointers with Keron Biggs nailing his first three trey attempts, the final one giving the home team a 15-8 lead with 16:12 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks, however, responded with three unanswered baskets by Trevor McDade, Alijah Bennett and Daniels to pull to within one, 15-14, with 14:52 to go in the half.

West Georgia managed to give itself some breathing room over the next six minutes, saw the Hawks pull to within one again, 29-28, on a layup by McDade with 8:46 to go in the first half, then regain the momentum down the stretch.

A free throw by Willie Evans gave West Georgia a 10-point lead, 46-36, a spread that the home team matched with three seconds to go until the break when Deonire Brown found the range from beyond the three-point arc – the Wolves' seventh of the first 20 minutes – that gave them a 51-41 halftime edge.

The Wolves carried the momentum they found at the end of the first half into the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Hawks 9-2 in the first two minutes of the second half assuming a 60-43 lead and never looked back.

With 16:30 to go, West Georgia made it a 20-point game, 67-47, and almost five minutes later the Wolves assumed their largest lead of the night, a 29-point margin, 85-56 when Marcus Dortch hit two free throws.

McDade joined Daniels in double figures with 16 points while Bennett and Amonte Potter added 10 each.

Briggs, who hit six of his nine three-pointers, led the Wolves with 21 points, Steph Branch added 19, Dortch finished with 15 and Brown had 12.
