The Hawks needed overtime, twice, but in the end Shorter topped West Florida 94-92 to complete the season sweep of the Argos.
Shorter improves to 11-10 overall and 6-9 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Argos move to 3-14 on the year and 2-12 in conference play.
The game remained close, with the teams trading the lead for most of it.
The Hawks largest lead of the second half came as
Phil Taylor netted a free throw to bring Shorter's advantage to six (51-45), but the Argos tallied the game's next six points to erase the lead and swing the momentum into their favor; taking a four point lead of their own on a three from Jason Laatsch with 8:43 to play. Shorter, answered with a pair of free throws from Taylor and a dunk from
Chris Daniels, and took the lead on a three from Taylor minutes later.
The final minutes of regulation were back-and-fourth with West Florida taking a two point lead on a layup from Austin Somerfield with just over a minute to go, but with seconds to go
Trevor McDade converted a pair of free throws to tie the game and send it to extra time.
Shorter opened the first overtime with a 6-0 run, thanks to baskets from Daniels, McDade, and
Amonte Potter; only to have the Argos come back. The Hawks regained the lead in the final seconds on free throws from McDade, but Rashaan Benson netted two of his own to knot the game at 82 and force another overtime period as Taylor saw his game-winning three miss the mark as the buzzer sounded.
The Hawks led by as many as four, twice in the second overtime. But, both times, the Argos answered. In the end, however, Shorter took the win as McDade netted a layup with three seconds to play for the 92-94 final score.
Four Hawks finished in double figures with both Daniels and Taylor finishing with double-doubles. Taylor led the way with 28 points, 10 rebounds and Daniels added 15 points, 11 rebounds. While, McDade finished with 22 points and four steals, and Potter added 18 points.
The Argos were led by Sommerfield's double-double of 33 points, 13 rebounds.
Shorter will be back in action Thursday, February 4, when North Alabama visits the Winthrop-King Centre for an 8:00pm start.
