Argos sweep Hawks

ROME -- West Florida swept the Hawks in the first two games of a three game Gulf South Conference series Saturday afternoon; winning both games by a 5-0 final score.

In the opener, the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Argos pushed three runs across, and went on to add one in both the eighth and ninth for the 5-0 score. While in the second game, West Florida used a four run third inning and a run in fourth to earn the win 5-0.

In total the Hawks were held to seven hits on the day –five in the opener and two in the finale – and were held hitless until the fifth inning of each game. Dustin Lawson put Shorter in the hit column in game one with a double, and turned in a single in game two to break the hitless streak.

Lawson finished the day with three hits, while Bryan Mathews chipped in with two.

Travis McPherson took the loss in game one; pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three runs – one earned – on three hits with ten strikeouts. Colton Cross was tagged with the loss in game two; allowing five runs – four earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts.

The Hawks will look to avoid the series sweep Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
